In general, to prevent hairballs accumulation, exercise, adequate supply of water, and a high-fiber diet are important. Introducing papaya enzyme as a supplement helps prevention and also to clear the hair which has been ingested. The enzyme in papaya digests protein, which is what fur is; this is to keep hairballs from forming in their stomach or help dissolve any that are there already there.

They also enhance the movement of the intestine, improving the digestion of food which also prevents hair accumulation in the stomach swallowed.
